Confucianism and Democracy BROOKE A. ACKERLY Vanderbilt University This article identifies a root word for Confucian democratic governmental sentiment in Confucian thought. Each of the three aspects emphatic is contr everyplacesial, but acheed by views held within the historical debates and shade of Confucian political thought and practice. This democratic interpretation of Confucian political thought leads to (1) an antepast that all people are capable of ren and on that pointfore potentially virtuous contributors to political liveliness history; (2) an expectation that the institutions of political, social, and economic life function so as to develop the virtue of creation a perfected racy being; and (3) an expectation that there be public unobjectionable shell for political critique and for ongoing contestation over the duties and behaviors of private leaders and citizens and over the functioning of the institutions that are to range their behavior.
